DISTRICT ORGANIZATION

The Escambia County Soil and Water Conservation District is a governmental subdivision of the State of Alabama charged with the responsibility to work for the conservation and development of soil, water and related natural resources in Escambia County, Alabama.

The district has a working arrangement with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture, to assist in its aims and objectives. Under the arrangement, NRCS provides professional conservation technicians to help the district in its conservation efforts. The district channels the services of these technicians to land users and sets priorities for the type and amount of work to be done.

The Escambia County Soil & Water Conservation District is governed by a board of five supervisors. They are appointed to three-year terms and receive no salaries for their services. Current supervisors are Broox G. Garrett, Jr., chairman; Nell Wiggins, vice-chairman; Frank M. Nalty, Jr., secretary-treasurer; Hooper Matthews, III, and Willis "Kent" McGhee, members.

The appreciation of the Board of Supervisors goes out to our many cooperators, news media and other individuals and organizations for their written and vocal support; to our affiliate members and units of government for the their financial support; Alabama Farmers Federation, the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, and the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) for promoting soil and water conservation legislation; the assistance provided in the district by the Alabama Forestry Commission, Farm Service Agency, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, U. S. Forest Service, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
