Environmental Field Day 2002

The District, along with the Alabama Forestry Commission, sponsored the 2002 Environmental Field Day in April. This event once again proved to be a huge success. Over 800 first grade students and teachers attended. Each student was given a t-shirt to wear. There were five different stops at this event. These were Nonie’s Ark, Animal Encounters. Here the children got to see and even pet rare and exotic animals. They learned how animals help us take care of the environment. At the log cabin stop, the children learned about life over 200 years ago and how things have changed.

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians showed the children how the Indians respected nature and believed in taking care of the earth. The nature trail taught the kids about several different types of trees and how to protect them. The Water Quality Education Stop taught the children about the water cycle and how to conserve fresh water. There was also a hayride where they got to see the troll.  While they ate, the children got a chance to visit with Ruby Raindrop, Sammy Soil, Smoky the Bear, Woodsy Owl and Sparky the Fire Dog.
