Alabama Forest Land Recovery Program Accepting Applications

Montgomery, Ala. (April 29, 2005)  The sign-up period for assistance through the Alabama Forest Land Recovery Program has been set for May 10-31, 2005. Please Note:  Sign up extension will run through June 17, 2005.   Local Soil and Water Conservation District Offices will be accepting applications.  Hurricane Ivan hit Alabama on September 16, 2004, and caused tremendous wind and water damage throughout the State.  Congress, as well as the Governor of Alabama, and other leaders have recognized the importance of timely and efficient recovery efforts.  In Alabama, $4 million has been allocated to help minimize the losses caused by Hurricane Ivan.

Over the next three years, direct, professional forestry advice and financial cost-share assistance will be available.  Funds may be used for debris removal, replanting of timber, and other related purposes.

An Alabama landowner is eligible to apply for program assistance if all of the following requirements are met:

  1. The landowner is an individual, group, association, corporation, Indian Tribe, or other legal private entity owning not more than 5,000 acres of timber producing forest land,
  2. The landowner owns forest land in Alabama where fifteen (15) percent or more of the landowner’s forest resource loss or damage has occurred as a result of one or more hurricane or tropical storm events during the 2004 hurricane season,
  3. The landowner has not received, nor will receive, cost-share assistance from the Farm Service Agency under the Tree Assistance Program,
  4. The landowner is not receiving federal cost-share or annual payments for the same timber producing forest land that is being applied for under the Forest Land Recovery Program,
  5. The landowner agrees to maintain trees planted under the Forest Land Recovery Program for a minimum of ten (10) years.

Contact your local Soil and Water Conservation District after May 5th for an application form and for more information and program details at 175 Ag Science Drive, Ste A Brewton, AL 36426 and (251)867-8042, ext. 3.
